Thanksgiving Tradition<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Every Thanksgiving, Dad made turkey dressing<\/p>\n\n\n\n
from the family recipe. Saltine crackers, eggs, milk,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
onion with poultry seasoning and sage. He used<\/p>\n\n\n\n
a big aluminum bowl that when younger I thought<\/p>\n\n\n\n
was special for the dressing. Later, I realized<\/p>\n\n\n\n
it was just the biggest bowl we had. Mom peeled<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and chopped onion. Dad crushed saltines<\/p>\n\n\n\n
in their sleeves then added the rest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mom would taste test. In his later years,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dad would add too much sage. He spooned<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the stuffing into the cavity even in the skin<\/p>\n\n\n\n
where the neck used to be. Sutured it up<\/p>\n\n\n\n
with skewers and twine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mom got up early to bake the pumpkin pie,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
put the turkey in to roast. Mom and Dad are gone,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
my brother, Fred, is in Virginia. Really not much<\/p>\n\n\n\n
family left. We don\u2019t try to get together at Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We both used to worked on that Thursday<\/p>\n\n\n\n
or the Friday after. Christmas dinners in Virginia<\/p>\n\n\n\n
are a major affair, beef wellington comes to mind—<\/p>\n\n\n\n
nothing as simple as turkey with saltine dressing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
