On a long, icy winter\u2019s night<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I, a traveler, find myself in the canyon of loss<\/p>\n\n\n\n
with only my dog as a companion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is strewn with boulders large and small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I am blocked from spring\u2019s verdant valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I know it exists; I have seen it in my dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Snow and ice blanket the canyon\u2019s stones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I stumble along the treacherous track,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
faint as moon\u2019s shadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The trail takes us up and down, whips<\/p>\n\n\n\n
us from one direction to another. At times,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I just want to lie down in the cold, go to sleep. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
My dog won\u2019t let me; there is no one else<\/p>\n\n\n\n
to care for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Soon, the route becomes straighter but still rocky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I learn to step only on flat stones, keeping<\/p>\n\n\n\n
my balance. Finally, my eyes on the mouth<\/p>\n\n\n\n
of the canyon, I begin to see the dewy grass<\/p>\n\n\n\n
in the valley\u2019s basin. The dog and I enter,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
knowing spring will soon green the valley\u2019s floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
