Loggerhead Turtle<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thirty years since I\u2019ve <\/p>\n\n\n\n
touched this beach. In my <\/p>\n\n\n\n
leather egg sac, I felt<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the waves crash with only<\/p>\n\n\n\n
pauses of quiet. I ripped <\/p>\n\n\n\n
a hole in the egg, crawled <\/p>\n\n\n\n
into the sand, began <\/p>\n\n\n\n
to dig upward. My\nnest <\/p>\n\n\n\n
mates clambered<\/p>\n\n\n\n
over one another, all vied <\/p>\n\n\n\n
for the surface. I blinked <\/p>\n\n\n\n
at the moon painting <\/p>\n\n\n\n
a path to the sea, cleared <\/p>\n\n\n\n
my nose of sand, began <\/p>\n\n\n\n
my trek to the waves. Once<\/p>\n\n\n\n
past, the Gulf Stream <\/p>\n\n\n\n
drifted me north, then east <\/p>\n\n\n\n
towards Africa, each year<\/p>\n\n\n\n
brings me closer to coastal<\/p>\n\n\n\n
waters. Long lines hooked <\/p>\n\n\n\n
many turtles, smiling dolphin <\/p>\n\n\n\n
and tatted fishing nets <\/p>\n\n\n\n
killed others. I am\nthe only<\/p>\n\n\n\n
survivor from my nest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
but the smell of the sand <\/p>\n\n\n\n
guides me. I ride the\nwaves <\/p>\n\n\n\n
onto the beach, <\/p>\n\n\n\n
tread past <\/p>\n\n\n\n
the high tide line,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
begin to dig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
