{"id":360,"date":"2020-03-24T19:07:38","date_gmt":"2020-03-24T19:07:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thecatbirdsang.com\/?p=360"},"modified":"2020-03-24T19:07:38","modified_gmt":"2020-03-24T19:07:38","slug":"seeing-my-mother","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thecatbirdsang.com\/www\/seeing-my-mother\/","title":{"rendered":"Seeing my Mother"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Seeing\nMy Mother<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\navoid looking at myself in photos and mirrors.&nbsp;\nAs I grew up,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the\nmirror on top of the dresser greeted me every morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nan early photo, I have a gap-toothed grin, my left ear sticks<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>out\nfrom under my riding helmet.&nbsp; I hold the trophy\nout I front of me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nhigh school, I saw someone who wanted to fit in, I wore a paisley shirt<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(big\nat the time, knee socks weren\u2019t) to the dance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\nlike myself best in the photo of me and my horse sailing over the jump,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>hands\nand arms in line with the bit, heels down, toes forward.&nbsp; The latest picture<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>shows\nme hopping over the log, hands grabbing mane and toes sticking out.&nbsp; When last<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>at\nhome, waking to a morning of cleaning closets of the clothes that my mother\nwould no longer wear, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\nsat on the edge of the bed, stared back at myself, lines around the eyes,\nlongish face, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>left\near sticking out.&nbsp; These days, I try not\nto see myself in the mirror that came with the house<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>but\nsometimes catch a glimpse of my second self when walking by.&nbsp; I look<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>at\nmy reflection before brushing my teeth, I see myself becoming my mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Unbroken\nJournal<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Dec\n2017<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seeing My Mother I avoid looking at myself in photos and mirrors.&nbsp; As I grew up, the mirror on top of the dresser greeted me every morning.
