Casting Salt<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Like\nsleet, the salt comes out so fast <\/p>\n\n\n\n
that\nit over runs the teaspoon<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and\nscattered on the floor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mother,\nsuperstitious as she was,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
would\nremind me to take a pinch <\/p>\n\n\n\n
and\nthrow it over my left shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This\nto ward off evil spirits<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and\nprotect my soul. I wonder<\/p>\n\n\n\n
if\nthe cake will fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But\nI leave the salt on the floor <\/p>\n\n\n\n
knowing\nI might spill more <\/p>\n\n\n\n
or\nsnow the floor with flour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I\nput the cake in the oven, <\/p>\n\n\n\n
check\nback in an hour <\/p>\n\n\n\n
for\nany effects of my sloppy work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But\nno harm done, the cake rose <\/p>\n\n\n\n
in\nthe pan and is golden brown <\/p>\n\n\n\n
on\ntop just like the recipe said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I\nsweep up the mess I made. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
