Thinking of You on Holden Beach, Labor Day<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Early\nmorning sun dyes the sky <\/p>\n\n\n\n
lipstick\npink and pumpkin orange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Evening\u2019s\nsun will replace <\/p>\n\n\n\n
these\nwith shades of gray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Waves\nthunder onto the shore, <\/p>\n\n\n\n
shaking\nthe ground as I walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nwind blows foam off the storm– <\/p>\n\n\n\n
whipped\nwaves that come in sets of ten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Foam\nskitters across the sand, <\/p>\n\n\n\n
melts\ninto receding waves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Above\nthe tide line, the sand <\/p>\n\n\n\n
is\nloose and hot, below, it is laced <\/p>\n\n\n\n
with\nfootprints of laughing gull and sanderling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But\nthis is how it is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Afternoon\nsun bores into my brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wind\nlashes dry sand that<\/p>\n\n\n\n
roughs\nup my legs as I walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Remains\nof fishing lines, Styrofoam cups <\/p>\n\n\n\n
assault\nmy eyes. I walk anyway,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
hoping\nthe wind will blow you away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
