Some have a notch in the tissue,<br \/>\nperhaps eaten by a box turtle.  The mushroom pokes<br \/>\nup from the musty earth floor.  At first, it is squat and fat,<br \/>\nlike a Buddha.  Then, like an umbrella, its top opens.<br \/>\nCome Fall, the mushroom\u2019s cap will drop its spores<br \/>\ninto the forest wind.<\/p>\n<p>The desert cracked as the spore dropped<br \/>\nto the sand.  The top unfolded; its stem<br \/>\ndangled below.  Behind protected bunkers, officials<br \/>\nheard the blast rushing towards them;<br \/>\nsaw blinding light; felt the winds that followed<br \/>\nacross the scorched desert.
