The other is to the house<br \/>\nI called home for 44 years.<br \/>\nDad bought it because it had a barn and pasture.<br \/>\nWe paneled the walls, got new carpet, replaced<br \/>\nthe barn\u2019s sagging foundations.<\/p>\n<p>The house was empty after Mom died&#8211;<br \/>\neven though Dad was there.<br \/>\nAfter he left, emptier still.<br \/>\nIn the end, it contained only mattresses,<br \/>\na computer, a couple of old chairs, and lamps.<br \/>\nEverything else went to Goodwill or a friend\u2019s church.<\/p>\n<p>It has been sold for a month now&#8211;<br \/>\nhouse, barn, and 7 acres in the middle of town.<br \/>\nDon\u2019t know what happened to the computer and old chairs.<br \/>\nAsked Dad what I should do with the key;<br \/>\nhe never answered.<\/p>\n<p>II<\/p>\n<p>Took the key off today<br \/>\nDad is gone, no reason to return.<br \/>\nI only need the key with the yellow paint.<\/p>\n<p>Poetry Quarterly Jan 2014<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Keys I have two house keys on the same ring; look so much alike I put a dab of yellow paint on mine.
