Typing Mom’s Letters<\/strong>
\nThe black lamp hovers over ruled papers
\nand blue ink, all 70 years old.
\nWrapped in paper, the rolled up letters were dated
\n1941 to 1942. A Webster’s International Dictionary
\nsits on top of them to straighten them out;
\nthen I iron them. To keep them flat as I transcribe them,
\nI read through her Pyrex baking dish.<\/p>\n

Shining onto a college life of Physics, German,
\nSunday movies, the lamp reminds me of a giraffe:
\nneck curved over the letters, its beam a tongue of light.
