{"id":210,"date":"2018-11-16T19:16:59","date_gmt":"2018-11-16T19:16:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thecatbirdsang.com\/www\/?p=210"},"modified":"2018-11-16T19:16:59","modified_gmt":"2018-11-16T19:16:59","slug":"paper-wasp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thecatbirdsang.com\/www\/paper-wasp\/","title":{"rendered":"PAPER WASP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>PAPER WASP<\/strong><br \/>\nA mystery&#8211;<br \/>\nblack crepe-paper wings,<br \/>\nantennae tipped in orange&#8211;<br \/>\nthey come every autumn.<\/p>\n<p>I sweep the floor, turn around,<br \/>\nthere one sits as if risen<br \/>\nfrom between the cracks.<\/p>\n<p>Tap, tap, tap-I look up,<br \/>\nanother flies at the ceiling.<br \/>\nOne, languishing in the<br \/>\nsink&#8217;s food strainer, startles me.<\/p>\n<p>The fliers migrate from living room<br \/>\nto kitchen. Some, quite still,<br \/>\nnear death I presume. The dog, who<br \/>\ninspects everything, ignores them.<\/p>\n<p>I light paper and pine to smoke<br \/>\nthem out of the chimney, put saran wrap<br \/>\nover the floor vents, tape the spaces<br \/>\nbetween the window and sill.<br \/>\nI have yet to find a nest.<\/p>\n<p>I slap a yogurt cup over each wasp,<br \/>\nslide the envelope underneath, release<br \/>\nthem outside. Most wander on the rail.<\/p>\n<p>Limb by limb, legs curl under, wings<br \/>\nfold over the back.
