Dad&#8217;s face appeared<br \/>\nat the kitchen door. Something was wrong.<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t remember how they told me. <\/p>\n<p>My horse was dead, spooked<br \/>\ninto a metal post, must have hit<br \/>\nan artery, bled to death.<br \/>\nIt was Sunday. God didn&#8217;t let<br \/>\nthings like this happen. <\/p>\n<p>Didn&#8217;t go to church that day.<br \/>\nWe had to bury Big Red.<br \/>\nMy parents wouldn&#8217;t let me watch.<br \/>\nThe bulldozer had to drag him to the hole.<br \/>\nSpent the rest of the day trying to be brave<br \/>\nbut after every phone call, I cried some more. <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve had other horses,<br \/>\nwatched one die<br \/>\nas wind picked at his mane.<br \/>\nBut I haven&#8217;t been back to church. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GRAY SUNDAY, 1963 I was at the sink stacking dishes in the washer after breakfast.
